Tour 6: Eton, Windsor Castle & Runnymede
Royalty and the River are the clues to the treasures to be found around Windsor –a thousand years of history. Take time to discover this truly English region. Arrive by 10.30 am, in time to watch the change of guard..
Tour passes through the villages of Dorney and Eton Wick, from where you can catch a glimpse of Windsor Castle. You will pass by Eton College, founded in 1440. Princes William and Harry studied here, before going on to university and 18 British Prime Ministers have been educated here. We travel through Datchet onto Windsor, alongside The Home Park. Here you will get a good view of the Castle, founded by William The Conqueror, and extended to its present size by King George 1V. We stop here to give you time to look around, it will take you approx 2 Hours to explore Windsor Castle, and see the restoration work undertaken after the 1992 fire. The castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation.
Visit Queen Mary’s doll’s House - a masterpiece in miniature, created by architect Sir Edwin Lateens, and given to the nation in 1923. See the State apartments magnificent formal rooms used for Court Ceremonial, State and Official occasions, with its fabulous art collections. Look up at the ceiling,created by Antonia Verso, and don’t forget St Georges Chapel - one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England. Started in 1475 by Edward 1V, and took fifty years to construct.
We now drive through Old Windsor on to Runnymede, where King John Signed The Magna Carta in 1215. Optional stop for coffee.
Those of us with children may wish to stop over night and visit nearby Lego Land.
